Even though the United States has some of the safest drinking water in the world, contamination can still occur from natural minerals, environmental pollutants, sewage releases, plus service lines and house pipes. Natural minerals like radon can also contaminate water. Environmental pollutants can come from living near farms, mines, gas drilling operations, factories, gas stations, dry cleaners, or landfills. Sewage releases can occur in municipal areas or from on-site septic systems. Water can also pick up contamination, including lead, by flowing through service lines and house pipes. 

If you have old pipes (possible lead), or if your water is privately sourced from a well, strongly consider testing your water.

If you will be caring for a baby or immunocompromised individual, consider testing your water. Contamination can cause gastro-intestinal illness and cause long-term effects, especially lead.

You should always test your water if it is ever cloudy, colored, has a bad taste, or has a bad smell.
