One sewer pipe, the lateral, connects your house into the utility sewer line under the street. It’s usually a 4-inch pipe that’s buried and properly sloped. Accurate slope is critical for the pipe to use the force of gravity to drain properly. Too little slope means it will clog at your home’s exit; too much slope and it will clog near the utility line.

There are five steps to installing a new sewer lateral. First, determining the elevations of where the home’s main drain exits the foundation and where it will connect to the utility main. Second calculating the slope by subtracting the final elevation from the starting elevation, then dividing by the total pipe run (length). Third, digging and lining the trench, often with sand. Fourth, installing the pipe and connecting it to the main utility line. Fifth, backfilling the trench, compacting each layer of soil carefully to prevent future settling.
